Huizar and Community Mark Completion of Northeast’s First Stormwater Capture Facility & New Exercise Equipment

Councilmember José Huizar and Garvanza and Highland Park community members joined city officials and North East Trees to celebrate the completion of stormwater infrastructure and park enhancements at Garvanza Park. The $3.8 million underground stormwater system diverts runoff from entering the nearby Arroyo Seco and drains the water, cleanses it of trash, oil and other pollutants, and stores it in two detention tanks with a combined capacity of 1 million gallons per rain event.  

As he did in 2007 to help build the Garvanza Skate Park, Councilmember Huizar championed additional resources to enhance the improvements to the Garvanza Park greenscape – this time identifying funds for the installation of new outdoor exercise equipment to help promote fitness in the Garvanza, Highland Park community. Councilmember Huizar has installed similar equipment in numerous parks in his district, with plans on adding more. 





NELAart Micro-Grant Event

Interested in art and have a sweet tooth? You’re in luck. Tickets are now on sale for NELArt’s next Micro-Grant event.


NELAart’s Micro-Grant events feature four art project proposals which ticket-holders can vote to support. The winner receives a micro-grant of the total ticket sales for the evening.


Tickets are $10 and each one buys not only the opportunity to be a patron of the arts but a taste of desserts by y Auntie Em’s, Little Flower, Jam Vegan Bakery, and New York Snow. Each ticketholder can vote once for one of the four art proposals.  Each artist will describe, and show their project, and the audience will vote on their favorite.


Tickets are on sale now at the Glass Studio on 5052 York Blvd, so please buy one now and support Northeast LA’s emerging artists and enjoy a show with your fellow art appreciators!

Councilmember José Huizar and Councilmember Paul Krekorian, chair of the City Council Budget and Finance Committee, invite you to join the Committee for a public meeting and hearing for Northeast residents. The 2012-2013 Regional Budget Hearing provides constituents a special opportunity to learn about the state of the City’s budget and speak with the City Councilmembers responsible for approving it.


Especially in this challenging time in which we are faced with very difficult choices about what we can and cannot afford to fund given our severe budget deficit, it is especially important that city residents participate and help our leaders make the best choices. We urge you to take advantage of this opportunity and ensure that your voice is heard as the City budget is shaped.

“5th Annual Peace in the Northeast Day”

Poster Contest



Deadline: Friday March 23rd


Attention students! You can design a poster for the “5th Annual Peace in the Northeast Day” and win $100!


Students in grades 8th-12th are encouraged to participate in this poster contest.

The design of the poster should be creative and inspiring and should promote peace in the Northeast. The poster must be original artwork created by a single student and must reflect the theme of “Peace.”


Posters must also have the following info:

  • Title: “5th Annual Peace in the Northeast Day”
  • Date: May 19th, 2012 (Time: TBA)
  • Location: Sonia Sotomayor Learning Academies
  • Space to list sponsors & attractions (i.e. food, music)



Entries should be submitted with your full name, phone number, and school to Christine at Children’s Hospital LA:  They must be submitted by Friday, March 23rd, however early entry submissions are encouraged.
