Eagle Rock Neighborhood Crappers?

by Tom Topping
The other morning I was getting myself going on some errands when former Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council President Steve Early came by walking his dog. As he walked past with his giant St. Bernard in tow, the dog stopped in our yard and did his business. Early didn’t stop, didn’t turn around and kept on walking. Again, the dog pooped on the sidewalk in front of the neighbor’s house. Early kept on walking.
A few days later on my morning walk, I saw him riding his motorcycle, so I asked him about that.
He responded in a very aggressive and hostile manner, so much so, I wondered if he was having problems at home or work.
“I always clean up after my dog. I had forgotten to bring a bag with me. I came back later and cleaned it up,” he declared.
A few minutes later, as I neared home, the dried remnants of the droppings were dried into the concrete of the sidewalk by the neighbor’s house. Yes, I took a photo, and no, I’m not printing it in the paper. In our yard, the droppings remain untouched, right where I saw the dog leave them.
Steve, don’t let your dog poop in my yard, or on my sidewalk or on the sidewalk next door either. Be considerate of your neighbors who don’t want your dog using their yard and their sidewalk as his toilet, even if you do pick it up. Find someone else’s yard to poop in, and try not being so hostile when a neighbor politely mentions it to you. That way, you won’t end up reading about it in the local paper.

Water Rescue at John Stillion Brunch

by Tom Topping
On May 20, 2012, there was a great turnout for the John Stillion brunch to support the Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful. Michael Nogueira had graciously donated the use of his beautiful back yard for the event, and the food was fabulous along with the included mimosas.

Just seconds after Marie Klein lost her balance and fell into the pool, Boulevard Sentinel Publisher Tom Topping jumped in and got her to safety. Here, Topping, at right, and Marie, with her back to the camera, are dripping wet following the rescue.

The live jazz was excellent, but Marie Klein, one of the guests, was making her way with a dish of food around the pool to her table in the shade, she lost her balance and fell in the pool.
I was nearby talking to Jack Goldhammer, who was awarded that day for his boulevard cleaning and watering efforts, when I heard the splash and looked over to see an elderly person in the pool who was obviously in distress. I looked for her to be treading water and making her way to the edge of the pool but instead saw her arms flailing around and her head go underwater.
Without a thought I just jumped right in and grabbed her legs and boosted her up to the surface and to the edge of the pool where she was pulled out by others nearby. Most at the event barely noticed anything had happened at all, because it was over seconds after it started.
I was no worse for wear, but I can’t say the same about my T-mobile phone and Canon camera that I had in my pocket at the time.
After going home to dry out, I got back just in time to hear the closing remarks of the CERB board as they thanked the contrbutors and volunteers for the day’s event.
They report that their debt on the Eagle Rock canyon trail property has fallen from $72,000 to $47,000 recently with the help of anonymous donors.

Green Party Presidential Candidate Roseanne Barr Scheduled to Appear at DayDream Fest III

Green Party Presidential Candidate Roseanne Barr Scheduled to Appear at DayDream Fest III
The Eagle Rock based organization, Cannabis Clubs United with the Community (CCUWC) will be holding their third “Daydream Festival” at Alatorre Eagle Rock View park this Sunday, May 20. Scheduled to appear is television and comic icon Roseanne Barr, who is a Green party candidate for President of the United States.
The CCUWC, formed to educate the community about Medical Marijuana and to counter local prohibitionists’ efforts to shut down all the dispensaries, got off to a slow start two years ago, and is now picking up momentum after getting far and wide news coverage for their Medical Marijuana Shuttle effort. Their last Daydream Festival was a qualified success, as about 200 people visited during the 7 hour festival which included live music and food vendors from local eating establishments.
The event kicks off at noon and is scheduled to continue ’til 7:p.m. and will be held at the Alatorre Eagle Rock View Park, right at the base of the Eagle Rock, at the end of North Figueroa St. just past the 134 freeway.
For more information visit CCUWC or email info@cannabisclubsunited.org.

Southwest Museum to open on May 19

Southwest Museum to open on May 19
Southwest Museum advocates are rallying the community to participate and attend the re-opening of exhibit space at the famous Southwest Museum. Although the exhibit space will be limited to the upper and lower lobby areas of Los Angeles’s first Museum, observers believe that a good turnout will only help the cause of getting the Autry to reopen the building to its historic Museum use.
Long-time museum advocate Ann Walnum invites everyone to help by showing up to rally at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday May 19th, wearing their “Save the Southwest Museum” T-shirts.
Although the re-opening was touted in recent meetings, no publicity, no press releases and no notice on the expansive Autry website have been put out advertising this event.

1) After a year, the Huizar/Reyes council motion to set up a city Working Group/Task Force made it out of the Arts/Parks Committee on Tuesday. Thanks to the leadership of Councilmember Reyes and the strong support of Chair Richard Alarcon, there was some amended motion language introduced and adopted. Next step is back to the City Council for formal approval and that could happen at any time. When we hear the date this gets on the agenda, we will let you know.

WE WILL NEED YOUR PRESENCE AT COUNCIL. We know that Autry’s strategy has been to just let it get through committtee and will attempt to modify the motion when it gets to Council and bring in Autry supporters then. So, please try attend and let’s all plan to support getting this motion finally adopted. As CM Reyes stated “It’s now time to reassess and find good will to develop a partnership along with the community.” Or CM Alarcon’s thoughts: “Museums are not much without a community supporting them. You (Autry) have to get past this.” Please feel free to send a note/email or quick call with your appreciation to these Councilmembers.

2) This Saturday the Southwest Museum’s Re-opening of the hallway in the lower lobby will be the first time the public has had an opportunity to visit the museum in many many years. Come and Visit! Wear your Friends of the SWM Coalition t-shirt, stop in for a bit anytime between 10am – 4 pm and show that there is overwhelming interest in having the ENTIRE museum re-open, sooner rather than never.

If you can join us, please meet us at 10 am, either at the parking lot or tunnel entrance and let’s converge together as a united group. We will take the opportunity at about 10:30 to take a group picture somewhere to capture this historic event. We know this Saturday is the Peace in the Northeast event, the Lummis Day fundraiser, preservation conference and so many other activities competing for your time. But, try to visit when you can within the six hours it will be open, even if you’ve only got 15 minutes!

Right now, it sounds like Autry will have the new hallway exhibits open each Saturday from 10-4. But, it could be a short-lived opportunity as we’ve learned that there is a fiscal reason driving this modest re-opening. Seems like the public money from the earthquake funds of FEMA can’t be reimbursed if the museum is not “open.” We’re doing further investigation … more updates soon. Guess this starts to explain why Autry has not promoted this re-opening in their published calendar, weekly events email and has even downplayed what should be a significant event by their PR staff: “We don’t want to make a big deal out of it, we don’t want to raise expectations,” she said. “We’re just making the lobby accessible so people can walk into the building and see some highlights of collection.”

3) Summer Soda Tasting 2 — July 22nd from 5-8 pm. Advance tickets are now available for purchase at Galcos or online: http://www.friendsofthesouthwestmuseum.com/soda2.html
