Daydream Fest This Sunday, May 19th

Daydream Fest This Sunday, May 19th
For the last three years hundreds of Eagle Rockers have enjoyed an afternoon of music and outdoor fun at the Daydream Fest which is held right at the base of one of Southern California’s most iconic land marks, our famous Eagle Rock. Local grass roots organization, Cannabis Clubs United With the Community, sponsors the event to show support for our local medical marijuana collectives and for our community members who choose to medicate with this natural organic medicine.
The annual event, held at the base of our Eagle Rock in Alatorre Park (top of North Figueroa St.) hosts a variety of local bands as well as food and fun for the whole family. Local bands performing this year are Cosmic Squirrels, Morning Glory, The Steves, Super Group, Fawks-One and special appearance from Legion Underworld.
All proceeds from the event go to benefit the Collaborative Eagle Rock Beautiful (CERB) who bought and helped save the area below the Eagle Rock from commercial development. While you enjoy the music you can also walk the easy 40 minute Eagle Rock Canyon Trail up to the scenic view near the top of the Eagle Rock where you can almost see the Pacific Ocean on a clear day.
This year’s theme seeks to have the Federal government respect the State’s medical marijuana laws and stop raiding dispensaries. Although federal agents shut down all medical marijuana collectives in Eagle Rock last year, we still support the right to medicate with this natural herbal remedyas well as the right of the State to implement its own regulations without the meddling of the Federal government.
The majority of Californians want the Federal government to stay out of our State’s medical marijuana laws because a whopping 77% of all Americans support medical marijuana and a majority (52%) of Americans favor outright Legalization of marijuana in order to regulate and tax this commodity, something that is impossible under federal Prohibition.
The Daydream Fest is open to the entire community and goes from noon to 8 pm. Bring your own chair or blanket to lounge on and come and enjoy the music and the fresh air. There will be restroom facilities available and everyone is invited to bring their kids and their dogs for a day of enjoyment and fun in the park. Please ‘like’ us on our Facebook page ‘Eagle Rock Daydream Fest.’ For further information and directions we invite you to visit www.CCUWC.org

Vons Reveals Its Plans

Vons Reveals Its Plans

Will Meet with Community Next Tuesday, April 30 at 6:00 PM

If you’ve ever shopped at the Vons in Eagle Rock, you know that (1) the parking lot is crazy, and (2) the building has been surrounded by empty lots for what seems like forever. Formerly the site of bungalows that were bulldozed years ago, and lately the province of construction fences and homeless encampments, the area is now finally being developed by Vons/Safeway.

Before the recession, Vons promised all kinds of wonderful developments, but now we’re getting something more pragmatic: a row of mini-mall-type stores attached to the main Vons building, and a couple of other stores at the “point” where La Loma meets Figueroa. (Plus a new parking lot.)

Vons is building everything “by right,” which means they are requesting no exceptions to city codes that the public can weigh in on — in other words, they don’t have to meet with the community. But due to the hard work of TERA, CD-14, the ERNC and the Chamber of Commerce — and the goodwill of Vons/Safeway — Vons reps are coming to the Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock to show us what they have in mind, and to listen to our suggestions. They’ve promised to work with us, especially on things that will make the development “more Eagle Rock” — from landscaping and design to traffic flow in and out of the development.

Please attend the meeting, welcome the folks from Vons, and let’s have a great discussion that will hopefully make this part of town something to be proud of! The Center for the Arts is at 2225 Colorado, and overflow parking is usually allowed in the Bank of America lot.

Boulevard Sentinel Outranks Eagle Rock Association Poll on Colorado Bike Lanes.

The NELA community has spoken regarding removing auto lanes to make way for bike lanes.

OVERWHELMING SUPPORT TO SAVE THE AUTO LANES!

Results so far:

568 people who voted or signed petitions regarding removing boulevard auto lanes to make way for bike lanes.
565 voted or signed to SAVE the boulevard lanes, about double the number the Eagle Rock Association recently bragged about collecting.
(They claimed victory for “281 respondents” HA!)
Here are some other interesting numbers:
275 out of 277 respondents who live in 90041 expressed their wishes to SAVE THE AUTO LANES.
143 of 146 who turned in ballots from April Boulevard Sentinel voted to SAVE THE AUTO LANES.
313 of 316 NELA residents expressed their desire to SAVE THE AUTO LANES on Colorado Blvd.
214 of NELA residents expressed their desire to SAVE THE AUTO LANES on North Figueroa St.

Jose Huizar: Give us a demonstration of removing auto lanes.

Open Letter to Councilman Huizar and LADOT

It appears the the bike lanes might just come to Colorado, but I have a small request.

As you have experienced DOT planners working on this, would you request they make a quick assessment on the feasibility of temporarily closing the one lane each way on Colorado Boulevard for a week, or possibly just 48 hours during the week so we all can see first hand what the impact would be?

The fears and protests of a large part of the community would be assuaged if they can see for themselves the impact on traffic before any permanent or semi-permanent changes are made.

It would be a great chance to prove that your forecasts  (the city, council office and consultants) are right as to what impact the bike lanes changes will actually have on Colorado Boulevard auto traffic.

Common sense dictates that if would not take many resources to send a truck load of cones, a dozen “lane closed” signs and a small crew of street services employees to show up at around 11 pm on a wednesday night, close the two lanes from Townsend to Eagle Rock Blvd. and then remove them a week or so later after the community gets a good demonstration of how good or bad it will be.

Thanks for your consideration.

ERNC Bike Lane Vote April 2

ERNC Bike Lane Vote April 2

Last month, the ERNC heard a presentation from DOT engineers about proposed bike lanes on Colorado. But they didn’t take a vote on whether to support the project or not, mainly because the DOT and CD-14 were holding their big Colorado Bike Lane meeting on March 27, and they wanted more public input.

They’ll be at the March 27 meeting, and promise to listen to both the speakers and to the audience. On April 2, the ERNC will vote on whether to send a letter to DOT about the bike lanes, and what the content of that letter will be. The ERNC has no power to decide whether there will actually be bike lanes on Colorado, but the City listens to Neighborhood Councils on issues like this. If Eagle Rock wants bike lanes, then their letter could bump Colorado up the list of projects; and if the decide against them, then they can delay the project until DOT gets it right.

If you want to be heard on this issue, come to their April 2 meeting and fill out a speaker’s card. Or send them an email: info@eaglerockcouncil.org

TAKE BACK Colorado Boulevard from Cyclists

600 cyclists from all over the city have petitioned to take away our Boulevards and give them to cyclists. Click Here, and sign the petition to TAKE Back the Boulevards from Cyclists, and give them back to Northeast L.A. residents.

Is this the future of Northeast L.A.? Long lines of autos stacked up bumper to bumper right next to newly installed empty bike lanes?

Boulevard Sentinel NOT Opposed to Bike Lanes if Majority of NELA Wants Them.

Some of the bike-extremists mistakenly think the Boulevard Sentinel is opposed to bike lanes for Northeast L.A. The Boulevard Sentinel is not opposed to bike lanes. The Boulevard Sentinel is opposed to any such changes being imposed on the people of the community against their will.

We are opposed to slanted public outreach to keep any who might be opposed from hearing about such changes.

We are opposed to bikers from all over the city over-running public hearings that will mostly affect Northeast Residents.

Biker extremists who attack the Sentinel are wasting their breath. If they had any smarts, they would be better spending their efforts convincing residents their idea is better.

I have lived here all my life, it is my home, I’m not leaving, and my duty is to stand up for this community, and do what I can to make sure their voices are heard. If anyone faults me for doing that, it is because they know the majority of opinion is opposed to removing auto lanes until enough bicyclists are on the roads to warrant it.

Bike Meeting to be Biased by Occidental College #OXY #saveourNELAstreets

Two Wheel Social Engineers (the Biker Gang) are at it again, this time intentionally trying to slant attendance at the bike lane hearing by offering free pizza and beer to bikers who show up. (http://tinyurl.com/ccmmce9) It is clear that holding the meeting at a liberal arts college means that a captive audience of 2000 students on-campus will make a ready made gang of pro bike lane activists.
However, the Biker Gang is going a step further by holding a “Bike Mechanic’s Workshop” on the campus at the same time, offering free pizza and beverages to those that show up. The event is clearly a move to have more bike lane supporters show up to force bike lanes on Northeast L.A. residents.
The Bike Oven is the sponsor of the event, and founder and Flying Chicken Bike Shop owner Josef Bray-Ali (not a resident of NELA) is sure to put in a new order for couple of containers of Chinese made bicycles to sell to NELA residents after they are forced out of their cars.

North Figueroa to Close this Weekend – North of Colorado

Eagle Rock Construction Alert:

This weekend, Figueroa Street north of Colorado Boulevard — including the Colorado-Figueroa intersection — will be resurfaced by the Bureau of Street Services. The work will take place on Saturday, March 9th and Sunday, March 10th, between 5AM – 4PM each day. During this time, all of the affected areas will be closed to traffic.

The work will follow Figueroa from the Colorado intersection all the way up past the 134 on- and off-ramps and the east side of the Rec Center (near the ball fields and tennis courts), to the Glendale city line, where Fig becomes Scholl Canyon Road. If you have weekend games or parties to attend at the Rec Center or family trips scheduled to the Eagle Rock trail or Scholl Canyon dump, your parking and access will be affected.

While this may be an inconvenience, note that the notoriously bumpy Colorado and Fig intersection will finally (hopefully) get smoothed out. Some ascribe the potholes and mysterious puddles in this intersection to an underground stream that can still be glimpsed amid the sycamores in the Iolo Technologies parking lot. Old-time Eagle Rockers will also remember the infamous “Sinkhole of ’07″ that swallowed a yellow 5 Line trolley whole, along with Lars and Astrid Lundgren and their seven children. To this day, local legend claims that the ghostly family, in Edwardian-era dress, haunts the CVS parking lot, sometimes accompanied by a spectral band of Tongva Indians and a plesiosaur.*

If you want more information on the construction and closures, contact the Northeast Field Office of Council District 14 at (323) 254-5295. If you need access to the affected areas over the weekend, or require special accommodations, the good folks at CD-14 may be able to help you out.

deceptive agenda item pushing bike lanes at ERNC tonight

The Social Engineers are at it again, as the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council has published a deceptive agenda item pushing bike lanes for tonight’s meeting:

“DISCUSSION/ACTION: Letter of support to LADOT for bike lanes on Colorado and Figueroa as part of the LADOT’s 2010 Bicycle Plan – Ashley Atkinson, with presentations by representatives of the LADOT Bicycle Program (5 min.)

As in the manner citywide bike plan hearings were done, the voices of the opposition are being stifled by omitting the substance of the actual proposal which is to remove motorvehicle commuter lanes from busy boulevards.
The Neighborhood Council, elected to be the voice of the people, are in fact being more of a voice over the people, by failing to fairly describe the true substance of any agenda item.
To be the council they were elected to be, they should table this item until sufficient outreach is done that describes the true nature of the proposal, including a proper description within the agenda item which includes the phrase “will remove motor vehicle commuter lanes” on affected streets.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1P6FcUEUF2HwYl3jIMYEWfB2Mo9Ct3T17cTNy-jUv1HY/edit

UPDATE:

The Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council decided to wait until the councilman’s office holds a town hall on the subject. Date to be determined.

Boulevard Sentinel Endorses Kevin James

Normally we don’t go for Republicans, but after seeing So-Cal connected report tonight on double dipping by L.A. police and fire (they collect retirement while they are still working!) I see that Kevin James is the lone voice who at least says he would put a stop to it. The Boulevard Sentinel endorses Kevin James for Mayor of L.A.

SCORE L.A. HELPS SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS
STAY IN THE GAME
SCORE volunteers provide much needed mentoring to help small businesses thrive
[GLENDALE, CA – February 14, 2013] – Although SCORE Los Angeles has been helping start-ups and small business owners since 1964, many don’t know about the organization or the services it offers. SCORE L.A. provides workshops and roundtables across a wide array of business topics to help clients rapidly develop their businesses and grow revenues. In one year alone, SCORE L.A. provided mentoring and assistance to 14,431 clients. With proper guidance and individual mentoring, entrepreneurs have a far better likelihood of starting a business and staying in business.
Thought of as the mentors to America’s Small Businesses, SCORE volunteers are from every walk of business life. Most have owned or still own successful businesses – others come from high-level management positions; directors and VPs of Fortune 500 companies, owners and presidents of retail chains, manufacturing companies, distributors and franchisors.  All SCORE volunteers generously donate their time and their expertise to up-and-coming entrepreneurs.
According to the mayor’s Office of Small Business, Los Angeles is home to some 325,000 small businesses, making L.A. the largest small business community in the country. In a city as diverse as Los Angeles, there is no shortage of intellectual capital, and a great deal of that talent and intellect can be found among SCORE’s mentors.
What sets SCORE L.A. apart from other similar groups can best be described as nimble. There are various ways in which someone seeking advice can receive the help they need. It can be by scheduling in-person meetings with a mentor, over the phone consultations, emails, online resources or by attending one of the many workshops SCORE professionals and volunteers lead. The organization understands that a small business owner’s time is extremely limited therefore they have created various means for business owners to get the help they need.
SCORE National states that more than 90 percent of the businesses that sought mentoring from its volunteer mentors in 2010 remained in business in 2011. In California alone, SCORE has helped start more than 9,000 new businesses and its helped 11,045 businesses save an estimated 17,629 jobs. Furthermore, California businesses mentored by SCORE in their first year of operations grossed $1.8 billion in 2010 revenue, with an average of $122,942 per business.
SCORE L.A. offers Daily Entrepreneur Briefings each morning at its office in Glendale to introduce people to the services it provides. In addition to mentoring, SCORE offers workshops nearly every day of the week; here are just a few of the topics that are covered:
Management
Financing
Accounting and Budgeting
Cash Flow Management
International Trade
Human Resources
e-Commerce
Marketing
Public Relations
Technology
Business Plans
Legal Issues
SCORE volunteers are available to provide confidential, expert business advice and mentoring at no cost. More than 130 SCORE volunteer counselors provide individual mentoring and business workshops in various locations around the Los Angeles area. Business counseling services are provided best by appointment or on a walk-in basis. Clients can continue asking for help from SCORE for as long as they like, and they can use a number of the various mentors.
“As we all know, small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and yet locally, we are the ones that have been hit harder by the financial crisis. As an entrepreneur, I understand first-hand the daily challenges of running a small business. That’s why the services that SCORE L.A. offers are vital. Start-ups and small business owners don’t have to go it alone, we are here to help them every step of the way,” said SCORE L.A. president, Manuel Martinez.

Glendale police chase ends with crash in Eagle Rock.

Eagle Rock – Saturday, February 9, 9:30pm.
What began as a routine traffic stop in Glendale morphed into a short chase and ended in a crash on Colorado Boulevard in Eagle Rock. A man on a motorcycle failed to stop when Glendale police attempted to pull him over for a traffic violation. The GPD pursued him through Glendale, and into Eagle Rock, where he crashed into the back of a white Toyota Camry in front of the Colorado Medical Pharmacy around 9:30pm. The man was not visibly injured, but was taken away by ambulance. The motorcycle had been reported stolen, but this was not known until the chase had ended.
