Boulevard Sentinel Endorses Kevin James

Normally we don’t go for Republicans, but after seeing So-Cal connected report tonight on double dipping by L.A. police and fire (they collect retirement while they are still working!) I see that Kevin James is the lone voice who at least says he would put a stop to it. The Boulevard Sentinel endorses Kevin James for Mayor of L.A.

Huizar’s Vicious Circle of Disenfranchising Voters

Jose Huizar is working on refining the factual basis stakeholder definition for neighborhood council elections in response to the 313 factual basis voters who voted in the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council elections. He is shopping it around to get support from neighborhood councils in his area, as well as the BONC (board of neighborhood council commissioners).

Not surprisingly, Huizar left out a very important piece of information on the issue because it was their actions of conspiring to disenfranchise voters that caused it.

A few weeks before the election, Huizar, independent election administrator Terrence Gomes, ERNC leaders and a deputy city attorney (unnamed) openly conspired to disenfranchise voters who owned and worked at tax-paying marijuana dispensaries. Note that at that time there were no city laws or ordinances prohibiting such businesses, and in fact, law from a superior power, state law, allowing them was in full effect.

This widely distributed email message was sent out by ERNC leader Maria Nazario, who quotes it as being from a deputy city attorney (unnamed) and forwarded to her by Terrance Gomes.

“Our Office has advised that Medical Marijuana Dispensaries are not authorized under the Los Angeles Administrative Code as any of the permissible and enumerated uses contained within the Code. Therefore, the use of property as a Medical Marijuana Dispensary is unauthorized and illegal.
“Under the Plan for a Citywide System of Neighborhood Councils a factual basis stakeholder is a person who “declares a stake in the neighborhood.” (Plan, art. II, § 1.) That “stake,” however, must be based on legally permissible activity. Thus, a person who claims an interest in a neighborhood alleging that it is based on a Medical Marijuana Dispensary, which is an unauthorized and illegal use, is not an eligible stakeholder.”

Hence, taxpaying stakeholders and voters, authorized by State law, were disenfranchised from voting by Huizar, independent election administrator Terrence Gomes, ERNC leaders and a deputy city attorney (unnamed).

To excuse themselves from doing this, they reasoned that all a interested potential voter had to do was go down the street, buy a coffee at Starbucks, and bring the receipt in to qualify for factual basis. This was publicized widely.

Therefore, the entire situation occurred only because Huizar, independent election administrator Terrence Gomes, ERNC leaders and a deputy city attorney (unnamed) encouraged such factual basis stakeholders as a way to excuse themselves from critic’s charges they disenfranchised legitimate voters.

Now, with this new push to redefine the factual basis voters, Jose Huizar completes his viscous circle of flawed reasoning.

Disenfranchise voters. –>  Encourage factual basis to deny disenfranchising. –>  Eliminate factual basis. –>  Disenfranchise voters. –>  Encourage factual basis to deny disenfranchising. –>  Eliminate factual basis. –> Disenfranchise voters. –>  Encourage factual basis to deny disenfranchising. –>  Eliminate factual basis. –> Disenfranchise voters. –>  Encourage factual basis to deny disenfranchising. –>  Eliminate factual basis. –> Disenfranchise voters. –>

You get the idea. Jose? Do you?

Message from Councilmember José Huizar Regarding the SR-710 Extension

Message from Councilmember José Huizar Regarding the SR-710 Extension

I am opposed to any 710 extension route option that negatively affects our communities. In 2009, I introduced legislation calling on the City of Los Angeles to oppose several above-ground SR-710 extension options cutting through Northeast Los Angeles and I continue to oppose such routes.

As a Metro Board member, I voted against moving the current EIR forward since it lacked a clear plan of action and a designated route.

Today, without a clearly defined route for the EIR to study, this ambiguity is causing fear and confusion for many local residents. The project needs to clearly indicate one potential route and compare that with the no-build option and the available multi-modal options.

Of Metro’s 12 remaining options, the Freeway and Highway alternatives would have detrimental impacts on the communities they would go through. Therefore, I categorically OPPOSE the following routes: H-2, H-6, F-2, F-5, and F-6.

Today in Council, I introduced a resolution (see attached) reminding the City of its earlier opposition and calling on the City Council to oppose these newly defined routes, and any above-ground options. These routes would destroy historic buildings and neighborhoods, increase traffic congestion and cause irreparable harm to tens of thousands of people.

In short, these routes would not link communities, they would destroy them.

As this process moves forward, Metro needs to be more forthright with all parties involved, particularly the affected communities by engaging in an open and honest dialogue.

Per my request, Metro will hold a community outreach meeting in my district on September 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Highland Park Senior Center to provide residents and stakeholders with a greater understanding of the EIR process, the studies being conducted and a timeline.

I encourage everyone to make their voices and opinions be heard. Metro can be contacted directly via email at sr710study@metro.net.

Strike a blow against Citizens United

Strike a blow against Citizens United

The U.S. Supreme Court’s disastrous Citizens United v. FEC ruling has unleashed a torrent of anonymous campaign spending into our political system. Corporations have been able to exert a massive influence on our electoral process without being subject to any accountability for that influence.

Progressive champion Senator Sheldon Whitehouse is fighting back by pushing Congress to pass the DISCLOSE Act. And he has asked the public to join him as citizen co-sponsors.

Become a citizen co-sponsor of the DISCLOSE Act of 2012 to end secret election spending.

Southwest Museum to open on May 19

Southwest Museum to open on May 19
Southwest Museum advocates are rallying the community to participate and attend the re-opening of exhibit space at the famous Southwest Museum. Although the exhibit space will be limited to the upper and lower lobby areas of Los Angeles’s first Museum, observers believe that a good turnout will only help the cause of getting the Autry to reopen the building to its historic Museum use.
Long-time museum advocate Ann Walnum invites everyone to help by showing up to rally at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday May 19th, wearing their “Save the Southwest Museum” T-shirts.
Although the re-opening was touted in recent meetings, no publicity, no press releases and no notice on the expansive Autry website have been put out advertising this event.

1) After a year, the Huizar/Reyes council motion to set up a city Working Group/Task Force made it out of the Arts/Parks Committee on Tuesday. Thanks to the leadership of Councilmember Reyes and the strong support of Chair Richard Alarcon, there was some amended motion language introduced and adopted. Next step is back to the City Council for formal approval and that could happen at any time. When we hear the date this gets on the agenda, we will let you know.

WE WILL NEED YOUR PRESENCE AT COUNCIL. We know that Autry’s strategy has been to just let it get through committtee and will attempt to modify the motion when it gets to Council and bring in Autry supporters then. So, please try attend and let’s all plan to support getting this motion finally adopted. As CM Reyes stated “It’s now time to reassess and find good will to develop a partnership along with the community.” Or CM Alarcon’s thoughts: “Museums are not much without a community supporting them. You (Autry) have to get past this.” Please feel free to send a note/email or quick call with your appreciation to these Councilmembers.

2) This Saturday the Southwest Museum’s Re-opening of the hallway in the lower lobby will be the first time the public has had an opportunity to visit the museum in many many years. Come and Visit! Wear your Friends of the SWM Coalition t-shirt, stop in for a bit anytime between 10am – 4 pm and show that there is overwhelming interest in having the ENTIRE museum re-open, sooner rather than never.

If you can join us, please meet us at 10 am, either at the parking lot or tunnel entrance and let’s converge together as a united group. We will take the opportunity at about 10:30 to take a group picture somewhere to capture this historic event. We know this Saturday is the Peace in the Northeast event, the Lummis Day fundraiser, preservation conference and so many other activities competing for your time. But, try to visit when you can within the six hours it will be open, even if you’ve only got 15 minutes!

Right now, it sounds like Autry will have the new hallway exhibits open each Saturday from 10-4. But, it could be a short-lived opportunity as we’ve learned that there is a fiscal reason driving this modest re-opening. Seems like the public money from the earthquake funds of FEMA can’t be reimbursed if the museum is not “open.” We’re doing further investigation … more updates soon. Guess this starts to explain why Autry has not promoted this re-opening in their published calendar, weekly events email and has even downplayed what should be a significant event by their PR staff: “We don’t want to make a big deal out of it, we don’t want to raise expectations,” she said. “We’re just making the lobby accessible so people can walk into the building and see some highlights of collection.”

3) Summer Soda Tasting 2 — July 22nd from 5-8 pm. Advance tickets are now available for purchase at Galcos or online: http://www.friendsofthesouthwestmuseum.com/soda2.html
