As of press time on February 27, the tally of homicides in Highland Park this year stood at three; in all of 2019, there were two.
Captain Arturo Sandoval of LAPD Northeast Division told the Boulevard Sentinel that none of the homicides in 2020 appear to be related. He also said that police have increased patrols and directed additional resources to Highland Park.
The third homicide of the year, a fatal shooting, occurred around 5 p.m. on February 11 at Avenue 56 and Ash Street, near Monte Vista Street Elementary School. The victim was identified by the L.A. County coroner as Alex Cornell Ramirez, 38, of Los Angeles.
The second homicide, on February 1, occurred during what police say appeared to be a gang-related shooting on the 6300 block of Aldama Street. The victim was identified by the coroner as Santiago Ornelas, 33, of Los Angeles.
Police did not respond to questions about possible arrests in connection with the two murders.
In the year’s first Highland Park homicide, on January 6, Joseph Lopez, 15, was killed on the 5700 block of Fayette Street in what police said was a “narcotics related” shooting.
Archi Chavez, 19, a resident of the Firestone area, was arrested on January 13 and charged with murder. He is being held on $3 million bail and is due in court on March 24.
