Four hospitals near NELA – Glendale Memorial, Huntington, USC Verdugo Hills and White Memorial – are participating this month in Little Hat, Big Hearts, in which every baby born in February will receive a red hat knitted by volunteers. The program, by the American Heart Association, is intended to bring awareness to heart disease and congenital heart defects, the most common type of birth defect. In total, some 4,000 babies at 15 hospitals in L.A. County will get a hat; nationwide, more than 100,000 hats will be handed out at 660 hospitals in 40 states.
